What inspired the brand name?
Prior to Lee Valentine, I started a brand called Iconix Collective. During my time with Iconix, there were some cut & sew designs that I felt really didn’t fit with Iconix aesthetic. From that moment on I’ve decided to create a second brand under Lee Valentine since I was already using the name for many other projects of mine. Eventually I decided to keep the name permanently.
At what moment did you realize you wanted to start a brand?
I’ve always wanted to create something ever since growing up. Something that’s self-expression. I feel with clothing is a universal way to express one’s self.
What helps you get over creative blocks?
I believe things will come through naturally. If you force yourself to creativity, it won’t be something that you’ll expect. So, whenever my mind feels obstruct, I take the time off..
What is the biggest mistake you have made?
My biggest regret is to learn what my audience primary wears (in term of sizing). Initially, I stocked everything all evenly for sizing. Turns out there were astronomical of people who wear mediums & large.
What is the biggest success you have had?
The biggest success is having my collection being sold out on a size, medium & large were the biggest hit. I feel exhilarated when I hear how people rep my clothing line. It gives a huge confident booster on how acquisitive they take my product to heart.
A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION PEOPLE MAY FIND WEIRD?
Every time when people try to second guess me, I show them what’s up haha. I feel it gives more fuel to the fire.
Favorite color to use?
Monochromatic and flamboyant color scheme. I can’t really choose specially.
ARE THERE ANY RETAIL SHOPS YOU WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU BRAND IN?
Never really came to mind but I would love to support the shop if we share the same palette.
ANOTHER BRAND THAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?
Steady Hands because of the clean, minimal, and color-blocking aesthetics. Current he’s a one man army too so that pushes me to do better. Neil Barrett because of his acute attention to detail, fabric development, and tailoring. Most of my inspiration on fabric construction and tailoring came from Neil Barrett.
Where do you see yourself and the brand in 1 year and 5 years?
A year from now I see myself still slowly building up my niche audience. Providing exclusive, superlative, and experimental collections. Five years from now I can’t really plan it out from here, but I would love to see myself stocked in retails that share the same vision and ambition as I do. Hopefully with some employee that share the same perception as I do.
In 5 words or less describe your brand?
Minimal, clean, high grade garments.
