After subtly teasing another 992, I couldn’t help but wonder—how do you top the first one from 2020? It might not even be possible. The DBM 992 “No Emotions Are Emotions” shifted perceptions of New Balance, especially in Chicago, where Jordan reigns supreme.
During NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago, the so-called “dad shoe” brand made a statement. Teaming up with the city’s hottest streetwear designer, New Balance went head-to-head with releases from hometown legends Virgil Abloh and Kanye West—both backed by industry giants. Yet, the city showed up for Joe. Hundreds waited in line for hours, some overnight, braving subzero temperatures to grab his first official sneaker collab.
That DBM 992 was just the beginning. Now, five years in, the Joe Freshgoods x New Balance partnership has expanded dramatically—twenty sneaker collaborations across ten different projects, not even counting the “Conversations Amongst Us” campaign.
To celebrate the journey, Joe and New Balance are revisiting their debut project with a fresh take: the 992 “Aged Well.” Designed to look like a timeworn version of the original “No Emotions Are Emotions,” this iteration swaps its bright red panels for faded pink suede, complemented by a grey mesh base, natural tan leather on the tongues and heels, a pink-and-white midsole, and a black rubber outsole.
The “Aged Well” colorway might not have the same immediate impact as its predecessor on visuals alone, but JFG is a master storyteller. His ability to craft a narrative has only sharpened over the years, and this rollout may be his most ambitious yet. The “Aged Well” 992 arrives with its own film project, with screenings set for major cities like Chicago, NYC, and DC.
