What inspired the brand name?
I remember going on thesaurus.com to search for a brand name. I forget what I searched, but I came across “ineffable”, an adjective meaning "too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words". That’s exactly how I wanted my designs and brand to be, so it stuck.
At what moment did you realize you wanted to start a brand?
INEFFABLE came to be in 8th grade when I came to the realization that it wasn’t cool to wear the same Polo and pair of Retros that 10 other kids in my grade also were wearing. That’s when it struck me that the easiest way to have a piece of clothing that nobody else had was to make it myself.
What helps you get over creative blocks?
Patience. I always stress myself out when I can't come up with designs and concepts. At the end of the day, I can never predict when creativity is gonna come but I know that once I'm in the flow I can get a lot done.
What is the biggest mistake you have made?
Last fall I over-ordered because I thought a lot of stores would want to carry the collection. I was wrong and still have a lot of inventory sitting in my mom's basement. It set me back big time.
What is the biggest success you have had?
In March of 2016, Offset wore a flannel I designed for INEFFABLE. Previously, it got some attention but that shot it to the next level. I was able to push 200 of them in the span of a couple weeks and it helped the brand receive a lot of attention and press. That's the obvious answer. Each season brings new success. For this season, the brand is being stocked in its first store in Japan. That's huge. It was also just featured on Highsnobiety's Under The Radar section. Both of those mean a lot to me. Selling a lot of flannels is cool but having people tell me that they saw someone wearing INEFFABLE or just seeing the brand maturing is most rewarding.
A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION PEOPLE MAY FIND WEIRD?
I really pull inspiration from anywhere. I enjoy people watching and looking at how to take something completely unrelated to clothing and to present it with clothing as the medium.
Favorite color to use?
Depends what season I'm designing for. Typically I’d say black, grey, red and yellow.
ANOTHER BRAND THAT INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?
I wouldn't say that there's a brand that necessarily inspires me in regards to design, but I appreciate brands such as Cav Empt and Rip N Dip. I have always been a fan of how consistent Cav Empt is with their designs and image. Their web store is really cool as well. I’d never wear anything from Rip & Dip but after seeing what they did with their recent NYC pop-up store, I looked more into the brand. They’re crazy when it comes to branding and it seems like they’re willing to do just about anything to turn heads.
Where do you see yourself and the brand in 1 year and 5 years?
Truthfully, I have no clue. I hope that in a year from now the brand has grown significantly. I hope that it can support me so that I can give up my many side hustles. 5 years down the road I hope that INEFFABLE is in a handful of premium boutiques all over the world, I hope that it is a brand that a lot of people are aware of and I hope that I continue to progress with my designs in order to help make streetwear cool again.
